Susan Lenz - Window XXIX, 2011 Fiber Artist Susan Lenz: “My artistic mentor is oil painter Stephen Chesley.  His studio is across the hallway from mine at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios.  He’s been a self supporting artist for over 25 years.  He gave me good advice right from the start.  He always has an opinion for contemplation, a kind word when needed, a strong suggestion when needed, and...

Art Musings by Rod Cooper
At its core, the individual elements of art are nearly valueless; paper, canvas, paints, ink, clay, stone or steel.  It is when one engages passion, and intellectual, emotional property that value is added to art. Considerable value that exceeds accountants and spread sheets. If we look at history, art values transcend stocks, bonds or real estate. Art is valuable beyond “rational”...

Green Hill Center Artist-Jerilyn Virden
Jerilyn Virden is a very talented ceramist we had in Winter Show 2009 and her work is currently available for sale in the Shop @ Green Hill Center (www.greenhillcenter.org). I love Jerilyn’s work and have for many years now, since I first met her while working at Penland School of Crafts where she was a resident artist—from the very start, I knew she she was so talented. Great feed back from our first Drawing Revisited...
Dear Sir or Madam:   This letter is to inform all concerned of how amazing and educationally appropriate yesterday’s field trip was for my son and the first grade class at Pearce Elementary.  I am very thankful as a parent that I was able to be part of it.   The Central Library tied in wonderfully with ArtQuest by beginning with an observation and explanation of their wonderful sculpture,...

Moments In Time:
I am one of the photographers with work included in the current Fellowship exhibition. As such, and as I look forward to my part in August 18th’s “Photography Dialogs,” I’d like to share a tale of two pictures: Last week my wife and sister-in-law and I had dinner at Crook’s Corner, the landmark restaurant located at the corner of West Franklin Street and Merritt...

Pat Levitin   Please add this to your blog - I tried and could not do it. The exhibition that opened Friday night is outstanding - one of the best I have seen in a long time. The variety of the work and the artists was incredible. The quality and craftsmenship was fantastic. What a treat for the eyes and the soul. Thank you so much, GreenHill for sharing such a great show

"The best of the best" by Rod Cooper
The people of North Carolina have always responded to the rich   heritage of craft and visual arts from mountains to sea. Southern   culture is steeped in generosity and giving, and informed through   caring about beauty and tradition. The new wing of the North Carolina   Art Museum, just opened in April, is a testament to the contributions   of generous North Carolinians. Many people do not...

The circle is a fundamental form in art.
A line without a beginning, an unending line, it contains within it its past and future, and its perpetual present.  As the artist fellowship program approaches its 30th anniversary, the circle seems an apt metaphor in many ways. The exhibition of the first fellowship winners in 1980-81 was held at Green Hill Art Gallery, then as now an institution devoted to displaying the work of the best...

It's Better to Gift than Receive
‘Tis the time of year for gifts. It feels like spring is jam packed with occasions and celebrations - weddings, graduations, birthdays, Mother’s Day (better be good because you’re late on this one!) Father’s Day - whew. And with all these occasions, it’s hard to find special gifts. Well, Green Hill Center is here to help. Our Art a la Carte Online Auction is full of...

Best Friends - Fine Art
Fifi, Frank, Buddy, Stout, Junebug, Rascal, they are our best friends and face it, we don’t own them, they own us.  They are always excited to see you when you get home. They are full of joy over the simplest things - a walk, a stuffed animal, the same meal every morning and you can’t deny that they seem to know when you’re feeling a little blue. Our dogs and cats (even our...

“Collecting is a fine art in itself. My most valuable piece of art came from a New York City dumpster. Collectors' Stories
What do you picture when you think of an art collector? Does something particular spring to mind? I used to picture a room at Sotheby’s Auction House, dark wood, dark Oriental rugs and society’s upper crust dressed to the nines bidding seven figures for oil paintings and exquisite vases. I have an active imagination. But the point is, art collecting used to feel out of reach to me, and...
