Collector Story: John D. Gall

Tuscan Farm by John D. Gall from the collection of Massimo Fantechi and Rodney Ouzts
“About twenty years ago as I re-focused my primary discipline as an artist, I began to create original prints (etchings). What I did not know was that I had become part of one of the most collectible forms of artwork. The tradition of collecting original prints goes back to the very origin and purpose of creating prints, they are both part of a multiple series and often very affordable. My involvement with various printmaking organizations has allowed me to meet and even become friends with many printmakers throughout the country (and the world). I soon discovered that artist/printmakers love to trade their work and over the years I have acquired a wonderful collection of original prints by trading with others artists. Many of these printmakers are some of the most respected in their field. And, yes, I also purchased some. Another interesting thing about collecting prints is that many, if not most collectors, store their prints unframed. There are various ways to protect and store prints “flat” allowing easy viewing by admirers, so the lack of wall space is not an issue. Even if one is interested in ‘old masters’ artwork, prints from the past are generally available. Needless to say, collecting prints is just a small part of collecting art but thought you might be interested in knowing about my little world.”
